Pharmacovigilance: Back to the Future with ISoP 2025

Communications / 19 March 2025

The theme of this year’s conference is inspired by Cairo’s rich cultural and scientific history and commitment to advancing drug safety and regulatory science.

This year’s ISoP annual meeting, to be held from October 24-27 in Cairo, Egypt, is set to facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge and academic activities, and offer world-class educational opportunities in pharmacovigilance.

For all pharmacovigilance stakeholders, this is a great opportunity to network and collaborate with global experts from industry and academia. It also offers the chance to engage with regulators from various regions, discuss recent safety concerns, regulatory updates, challenges in pharmacovigilance, and potential improvements, as well as showcase innovations and the latest updates in medicines safety.

Hadir Rostom, President of ISoP Egypt Chapter & Chair of the Local Organising Committee of ISoP 2025
Cairo, with its unique blend of ancient history and modern vibrancy, is a city where past and present coexist in dynamic harmony. Strategically located at the crossroads of Africa and the Middle East, it offers a truly global perspective that enriches any dialogue, making it an ideal venue for engaging in meaningful discussions on the essential role of pharmacovigilance.

This year’s meeting was developed with ISoP members needs in mind; we have incorporated your feedback into our planning to ensure that all attending delegates get the most from the meeting. So, what should someone expect from ISoP 2025 in Cairo?

Our theme “Back to the Future” aims to reflect not only the future of pharmacovigilance, but to serve as a reminder that the past still holds relevance for today, such as seminal pharmacovigilance documents like CIOMS reports being used in present pharmacovigilance work.

Expect a wide range of topics that fall under the umbrella of pharmacovigilance, of interest to those working in governments, regulatory agencies, healthcare, the pharmaceutical industry and device companies, academia, and of course patient care. Indeed, anyone with an interest in ensuring medicines and devices are used effectively and safely will find something of value at this year’s annual meeting. For example, we plan to hold sessions exploring closer engagement between healthcare and the pharmaceutical and device industry, including topics such as the impact of telehealth and risk minimisation. We also cover application of new technologies such as artificial intelligence in signal detection and risk management. You will hear about the latest global developments in training and certification of pharmacovigilance professionals. With a growing pharmaceutical sector in the Middle East and Africa, there will be sessions and training on PV audits, inspections and compliance. There will also be regional updates from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

ISoP meetings are the place to debate tricky topics too, such as how we can best harmonise pharmacovigilance regulations across different regions to ensure consistent drug safety standards. We are delighted that this year WHO have arranged a half-day session with ISoP where we can discuss and explore collaborative frameworks and reliance models to streamline regulatory processes and further enhance global pharmacovigilance efforts.

We hope that there will be something for everybody at ISoP 2025 and that it will be great opportunity to learn something new, ask difficult questions and above all, have fun!
